Sickle cell is widely known as a genetic disease which does not allow blood to revolve around the body so with some foods and fruits it can be managed. Fruits as the say have several nutritional values and that’s why fruits determine how healthy man could be. Now I am going to list some foods / fruits which is going to be helpful to most of all those with sickle cell disease.

Garlic: The nutritional value of garlic can not be overemphasized. Garlic As an herb has been used by mankind for thousands of years ago. Most people think Garlic has no, actual nutritional value but I want to state here the nutritional value of garlic. According to the World's Healthiest Foods website, garlic serves as a "very good" source of both vitamins C and B6, and also provides trace amounts of several other essential vitamins.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is important for the construction and maintenance of cell walls, especially the skin, connective tissues, bones, gums and teeth. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant within the body, helping to reduce the level of harmful chemical agents called free radicals. Self Nutrition Data indicates that 3 cloves of garlic provide around 5 percent of the daily required intake of vitamin C.
Vitamin B6
Self Nutrition Data also indicates that the same 3 cloves of garlic deliver around 6 percent of the pyridoxine, also called vitamin B6, required per day by an average adult. This nutrient helps with the proper function of the nervous system, red blood cell formation, hormone activity and nucleic acid production. Garlic also contains lower amounts of other vitamins. These include 1 percent of the daily requirement of thiamin, also called vitamin B1; thiamin, known as vitamin B2; and pantothenic acid. Trace amounts of vitamins E and K, riboflavin and folic acid are also available in garlic.

Side-Effects of Garlic

Even garlic is not perfect. Apart from garlic breath there are other possible side effects, especially if used too excessive. Use the right way and not abuse it please.
Eating raw garlic is very strong and so not advices able to eat it raw because it heart led to heart burn so, eating too much could produce problems, for example irritation of or even damage to the digestive tract.
There are a few people who are allergic to garlic. Symptoms of garlic allergy include skin rash, temperature and headaches. Also, garlic could potentially disrupt anti-coagulants, so it's best avoided before surgery. As with any medicine always check with your doctor first.

Milk: Milk is good for everybody but more of good to those with sickle cell because it contains protein and protein helps build the body. Despite children's begging and pleading for milk and parents replying milk is good for us, what is the nutritional value of milk? Milk is a common household name but people do not no the value of milk.  Many people do no only that milk contains protein and Calcium but it also contains some other valuable nutrients which might not be popular.
Milk's Makeup

According to the National Dairy Council, milk is filled with nine essential nutrients that benefit our health:
  • Calcium: Builds healthy bones and teeth; maintains bone mass
  • Protein: Serves as a source of energy; builds/repairs muscle tissue
  • Potassium: Helps maintain a healthy blood pressure
  • Phosphorus: Helps strengthen bones and generate energy
  • Vitamin D: Helps maintain bones
  • Vitamin B12: Maintains healthy red blood cells and nerve tissue
  • Vitamin A: Maintains the immune system; helps maintain normal vision and skin
  • Riboflavin (B2): Converts food into energy
  • Niacin: Metabolizes sugars and fatty acids.

Water helps one not to be dehydrated, so dehydration is dangerous to those with sickle cell because insufficiency of water can make them weak. Patients with sickle cell anemia are advised to drink at least eight glasses of water per day. From my experience, “hydration helps dilute the blood, reducing the chances that sickle red blood cells will form.

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber.  A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.  Research has proved that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90minute.  No wonder banana is a number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

A banana can help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must for our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by most people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana.  This is because bananas contain tryptophan, one of the twenty common "amino acids" that make up all proteins that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

Eating a banana is good for the body because it contains vitamin B6 which regulates the blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: Bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. Banana can also refresh the body which is also a must need for people with Anemia.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work: Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps.  Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs.  The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
Temperature control:  Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers.  In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance.  When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels.  These can be re-balanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine", eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%"
A Banana Contains:

Foods that is not good for the body

  Red Meat

I asked an expert doctor what he thought about eating Red Meat see his reply below.
The question I asked: Does eating red meat increase the risk of cancer and heart disease?
For heart disease, the answer is pretty clear. Some red meats are high in saturated fat, which raises blood cholesterol. High level of cholesterol in the body increases the risk of heart disease.
When it comes to cancer, the answer is not so clear. Many researchers say it does raise the risk, especially for colorectal cancer.
A recent National Institutes of Health said more than a half-million older people who ate red meat and processed meat over a 10-year-period were likely to die sooner than those who ate smaller amounts. Those who ate about 4 ounces of red meat a day were more likely to die of cancer or heart disease than those who ate the least, about a half-ounce a day.
After a systemic review of scientific studies, an expert panel of the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research concluded in 2007 that “red or processed meats are convincing or probable sources of some cancers.” Their report says evidence is convincing for a link between red meat, processed meat, and colorectal cancer, and limited but suggestive for links to lung, esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, and endometrial cancers.
Unripe Plantain
Unripe plantain has been researched very bad for those with sickle cell. It contains Iron which has “branded as not good for those with sickle cell”. Please avoid this with any possible way because this has caused so many deaths. I have being along this road of sickle cell that’s why a emfarzing on this. To be continued
